Piano Department of China Conservatory of Music was established in 2001. It aims to be “an advantageous base of piano performance & education and an academic communication center as well as a piano music developing and popularizing platform with most influence”. As for its teaching conditions, it is the first “All Steinway Piano School” in Asia, and it had already finished a series of constructions of “Early-stage Keyboard Studio” and “Digital Teaching Auxiliary System”. As for its courses, it has many professional and ability cultivating courses like Piano Literature, History of Keyboard Arts, Chinese Piano Literature Research, Piano Pedagogy, Piano Accompaniment and Chamber Music, etc. And it hires many specialists from home and abroad every semester. The department holds the “Beijing International Piano Art Festival” annually ever since it was successfully held for the first time in 2006.

The talent cultivation of Piano Department has a complete education system from the attached middle school, undergraduates to graduates. In 2010, the “Teaching and Researching Office of Piano Arts” was set up. At present, there are 105 undergraduates and graduates, and some subjects like Piano Performance (attached middle school – graduates), Vocal Coach (graduates) and Electronic Organ (undergraduates). At present, there are 36 teachers and the Director of the department is Wei Zhang.

The concert established by the Piano Department named “China Impression, the special concert of Chinese piano works” combined Chinese music works, national instrument music with some western instruments like piano and electronic organ, which gained wide praises in many countries like Austria, Germany and the USA, etc.
