Founded in 1964, the China Conservatory of Music is one of the top universities under China’s Double First-Class Initiative and a secretariat-level institutional member of the Global Music Education League. Under the leadership of Communist Party of China and in adherence to the socialist doctrine of education, the China Conservatory of Music is committed to its mission of promoting and advancing the traditional Chinese musical culture. The China Conservatory of Music has long been known as the “Cradle of Chinese Musicians” and the “Palace of Chinese Music.”
The China Conservatory of Music has been consistently building and improving a comprehensive disciplinary system, academic system and discourse system of Chinese music with its disciplinary framework in a leading position. As one of the universities accepting international students funded by the Chinese government’s scholarship programs, the China Conservatory of Music confers doctorates in Arts (first-level discipline) and Music and has a research center dedicated to postdoctoral studies. The music institution provides academic facilities for postgraduates, undergraduates, and affiliated-high-school (preparatory school) students, based on a comprehensive disciplinary framework integrating musicology, composition and theories of composition, music performance, music education and art management. The various departments in the institution include the following: Musicology (The Chinese Academy of Music Theory), Composition, Conducting, Voice and Opera (The Chinese Academy of Vocal Music Arts), Chinese Instruments, Orchestral Instruments, Piano, Arts Management, School of Education, Department of Ideological and Political Theory Teaching, Department of Basic Teaching, and the affiliated high school, offering a multi-dimensional teaching system based on Chinese music theory, Chinese music creation, and Chinese music performance.
The distinguished faculty of the China Conservatory of Music includes educators with profound influence both within and outside the music industry. The teaching and research teams consist of National High-Level Talents, National Cultural Experts, National Teaching Achievement Award winners, teachers recognized by the Ministry of Education New-Century Excellent Talent Program, State Council Special Government Allowance recipients, presidents of national professional associations, teachers recognized by the Beijing High-level Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program, Outstanding Middle-aged Experts, Beijing Teaching Achievement Award winners, Beijing Great Wall Scholarship recipients, Beijing Distinguished Talent winners and Beijing Excellent Young Talent winners. Over the past six decades, the institution has achieved significant success in talent cultivation, as evidenced by the emergence of numerous renowned international talents and over 10,000 outstanding graduates across various disciplines. In recent years, the China Conservatory of Music has adhered to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and adopted a “people-centered” approach to art production. As an important channel of cultural communication, the institution will continue to promote and bolster the Chinese nationalistic music, organize high-level, Art Practice Center-based art production and performance and transform its cultural resources accumulated over the past six decades into the unique advantages in serving the national culture strategy and the development of Beijing, with the aim of building a world-class conservatory with Chinese characteristics.
