Music in China
Journal of Music in China is a large academic journal created by Chinese Student Union of Music which was an unprofitable independent research institute registered in California in January 1997 and established by a Chinese musician Zhou Qinru who is a doctor living in America. The purpose is to break language barriers and connect Chinese music academy and the world, effectively exploring, discovering, studying and understanding Chinese music. The first issue was available in fall, 1999, which was regarded as a successful attempt of Chinese scholars paving the way for Chinese and foreign music academic exchange with the help of peers. At the end of 2013 when earnestly negotiating with Chinese Conservatory of Music, the domestic editorial department of Journal of Music in China (within Music Institute) was established on July 1, 2014 to restart academic journal of Journal of Music in China. Wang Liguang, the president of Chinese Conservatory of Music, acted as the chairman of the editorial board; Zhou Qinru acted as executive chief editor and took responsibility for all editing affairs of Journal of Music in China; Kang Xiao who is the doctor of musicology and associate researcher of the institute of Chinese Conservatory of Music acted as director of domestic editorial department. On the basis of preliminary exploration and experience, the journal, through sincere cooperation and complementary advantages, pools nationwide music academic institutions, academic journal to jointly expand Chinese and English translation of literary theory.
After restarting, English academic journal of Journal of Music in China will mainly focus on foreign scholars and be based on Chinese music academy to strictly screen the latest domestic music theses and previous literature. Innovating layout design, adding transcriptions of text document, and advocating videotape-based theses text, the journal is to improve scientization, informatization of high standard and high efficiency, boost integration of Chinese music academy into the world music culture, and serve foreign readers in learning Chinese music and corresponding academy.
Journal of Music in China is a comprehensive music academic semiyearly. One volume per year, including two periodicals, will be published in May and November respectively. The journal is mainly to translate articles equipped with documentation value and appropriate for overseas market which are examined and published by domestic music academic journal. It contains current situation and historical research (including theory, overview and (individual?) case), research on classic chapters of Chinese traditional music, creation and research of Chinese contemporary music, Chinese scholars ‘ unique study(/studies?) on foreign music, English books, comments on academic audiovisual products and others. Besides, the journal will firstly publish English manuscripts examined by the editorial board or peers. In general, the journal would not accept Chinese manuscript or corresponding English version which are not released by domestic music academic journal, and recognized or recommended by the domestic editorial board. Due to differences concerning context of Chinese and foreign language, thesis style and target of writing, translation of Chinese and English music theses must be subject to complicated process of editing before translation, translation and examination after translation after selection. Authors are required to participate in necessary Chinese text processing and refined fabrication of image and videotape. We believe this process will optimize further refined development of Chinese musical academy.
Theses abstracts of preliminary volumes of Journal of Music in China have been included by catalogue of RILM. The journal will continue cooperation with RILM after resumption and bring domestic theses to international market after elaborate English translation.
Journal of Music in China will be issued to libraries of global metropolitans, libraries of music schools, reference room and scholars according to membership system. China National Publications Import and Export (Group) Corporation will be responsible for general agency of subscription of domestic members. Catalogue code is 489B0012.
