Global Music Education League is an important item on the agenda of Global Leadership Network on Higher Music Education. It is founded on September 12, 2017 in Beijing.  League president and board members were elected by secret ballot with all members of the league supporting.

Chairman of Global Music Education League: Wang Liguang, President of China Conservatory of Music (Asia)

WANG Liguang is the President of China Conservatory of Music. As one of the most eminent contemporary composers, he is also  an advocate of Chinese National School of Music, a professor and a Doctoral Advisor.

His compositions ranges from symphonies and chamber music to operas and film music, and so on. He has many awards under his belt, including the Outstanding Music Award at the China Huabiao Film Awards, Best Music at Golden Rooster Awards, “Five-One” Project Award, Golden Eagle Award, Audiences’ Favorite Compositions of the 1990s and other state-level awards.

Members of the council: Jamal Rossi,  Dean of Eastman School of Music (North America)

Jamal J. Rossi is the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean of the Eastman School of Music. Having served in leadership roles in music for more than two decades, Rossi has spearheaded significant collaborative educational and community initiatives and has wide-ranging experience in academic scholarship and leadership, teaching, performance, recording, and fundraising.

Prior to his appointment as Dean, Rossi served as the Executive Associate Dean at Eastman. Previous academic leadership appointments include serving as Dean of the School of Music at the University of South Carolina, and Assistant and Associate Dean of the Ithaca College School of Music.

An active saxophone soloist and chamber musician, Rossi is featured on numerous recordings, he has commissioned/premiered more than twenty compositions, and he has been a soloist with symphony orchestras and military/college/university bands. His articles and reviews have appeared in leading wind publications. A founding and current member of the Kilbourn Saxophone Quartet, Rossi was formerly a member of the Carolina and Empire saxophone quartets. Rossi earned a Bachelor of Music Education and Performance degree from Ithaca College (summa cum laude), the Master of Music from the University of Michigan, and the Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music.

Members of the Council: Kaarlo Hildén, Principal of Sibelius Academy (Europe)

Kaarlo Hildén acts as the dean of the Sibelius Academy from 1 March 2017 to 31 July 2021. He has been the dean of the Faculty of Classical Music at the Sibelius Academy since 2010. From 2007 to 2010, Hildén was the Program Director of Hanasaari Swedish–Finnish Cultural Centre. Prior to that, he worked for seven years as the music education director of Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia. He has taught the piano, practical accompaniment, and music theory at Sibelius Academy and Helsinki Conservatory of Music. Hildén has a Master of Music degree.

Members of the Council: Anne Walters Robertson, Dean of Division of the Humanities at The University of Chicago(North America)

Anne Walters Robertson is the Claire Dux Swift Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Music and the College and Dean of the Division of the Humanities. Robertson received her PhD from Yale University in 1984 and joined the faculty at Chicago that same year.

Robertson’s highly interdisciplinary research is focused on the music of the middle ages, with a particular concentration on 15^th-century sacred polyphony, the 14^th-century French composer Guillaume de Machaut, French medieval liturgical music, ceremony and architecture, and music and mysticism. Her publications include Guillaume de Machaut and Reims: Context and Meaning in His Musical Works (Cambridge, 2002), and The Service Books of the Royal Abbey of Saint-Denis: Images of Ritual and Music in the Middle Ages (Oxford, 1991), and many prominent articles.

For her scholarship, Robertson has been awarded the American Musicological Society awarded her the H. Colin Slim Award (2007), the Otto Kinkeldey Award (2003), and the Alfred Einstein Award (1989). She is the only winner of all three book and article prizes of the Medieval Academy of America. She was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008 and a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2015. She served as President of the American Musicological Society (2011-2012).

Members of the Council: Anna Reid,  Dean of Sydney Conservatorium of Music (Oceania)

An alumna of the University of Sydney, Professor Anna Reid has been a tertiary educator her entire career. She undertakes research in musician identity, creativity theory and practice, cultural heritage and sustainability, and higher education. She is also a cellist and viola da gamba player.

Global Music Education League is dedicated to promoting the establishment and inheritance of different musical cultures and musical genres worldwide. It aims to strengthen the exchange and cooperation of music education institutions in the world, and refine music education. Building a world-class platform comprises music pedagogy, research,  composition, talent cultivation, resources sharing and performing. Establishing an international system that adopts the development trend of globalization of music and promotes the development of the traditional music of all nationalities in the world. At the same time, making music an ambassador for world peace. Letting it eliminate barriers and bring more beauty into the world with its unique charm.

After the inception of Global Music Education League, academic reuses of music will be pooled to prepare for the compilation of World Music Encyclopedia and launch Yearbook of Global Conservatories. In addition, concerted efforts will be made by league members to organize world-class international competitions.  Meanwhile, the league will enable its members to share their quality resources, jointly cultivate students, exchange faculties,  mutually recognize credits and diploma, and carry out scientific researches with concerted efforts.

Global Music Education League will convene on a regular basis, and the president-council system will be implemented with a tenure of five years.

Since the inception of the Global Music Education League, China Conservatory of Music has entered into agreements on joint education with the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, the Department of Music at the University of Chicago, Eastman School of Music, Boston Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, School of Music at The University of Auckland(Oceania), Bangkok Thonburi University, Sibelius Academy at The University of the Arts Helsinki and the Department of Music at The University of York.

The establishment of Global Music Education League is not only the result of communication and mutual reference among global music institutions, but also an effective practice of the speech that President Xi Jinping gave on “the belt and road” international cooperation summit forum.
