China Conservatory of Music is a renowned institute of higher education. Advocating “Chinese National School of Music”, and attracting talents from around the world, the conservatory offers a distinctive academic curriculum embracing Chinese music theory, Chinese music composition, and musical performance.

As one of the core sections of the “Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Chinese National School of Music”, the Orchestral Institute of China Conservatory of Music strives to develop towards an internationally compatible orchestra and a platform for musical creation and artistic expression.


International Audition Announcement


China Youth Philharmonic Orchestra is subordinate to China Conservatory of Music. It is one of the first to put a specific focus on composing and performing Chinese musical works, aiming to establish and develop a platform to introduce and promote Chinese culture to the world.

As an integral part of the “Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Chinese National School of Music”, and under the auspices of the Orchestral Institute of China Conservatory of Music, China Youth Philharmonic Orchestra attracts world-class conductors, composers and performers.  In the role of guest lecturer and supporting the promotion of new works, they function as an essential and irreplaceable asset in the construction of its academic discipline.

China Conservatory of Music is authorized to confer bachelor’s degrees (Bachelor of Music/Dance), master’s degrees (Master of Music/Dance and Master of Fine Arts) as well as PhD degrees (PhD in Musical Arts/Dance Studies). The conservatory also offers postdoctoral programs and is one of the designated institutions for the “Chinese Government Scholarship” awarding to international students who wish to study in China.

Over 36 world top music institutions have established academic collaboration with China Conservatory of Music. 53 world-renowned musicians, such as Zubin Mehta, have joined China Conservatory of Music as guest professors. Numerous of the conservatory’s graduates are influential musicians and music educators. China Conservatory of Music is known as the “Palace of Chinese Music” and “Cradle of Chinese Musicians”.

China Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of China Conservatory of Music is now holding its 2017 International Audition. Professional orchestra musicians (Chinese/ foreigners) are all welcomed to participate, with audition terms as follows:


1. Nature of Audition:

Open audition, appointing the best applicants.


2. Audition requirements:

a. International audition opens to all applicants, regardless of nationality, location, and gender.

b. Under the age of 40 years old (born after 1/1/1976)

c. Bachelor’s Degree or higher required, with excellent professional skills and qualifications

d. Ability to adapt to an English speaking working environment


3. Opening Positions:

Violin, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass;

Flute (Piccolo), Oboe (English Horn), Clarinet (E-flat Soprano Clarinet and Bass Clarinet), Bassoon (Contrabassoon);

French Horn, Trumpet, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Tuba; Percussion, Harp.


Total Number of Positions: 30


4. Responsibilities:

a. Attending orchestra rehearsals and performances (including but not limited to concerts, operas, local and international art festivals, demos of new works, filming and recording sessions)

b. Teaching assistance of practical courses (orchestra performance techniques, art of orchestra playing, chamber music, ensemble courses)

c. Musicians should have their own instruments (except for harp and percussion)


5. Compensation and benefits:

a. Annual Salary System: starting at 200,000 RMB/ before tax (including China’s statutory five social insurance scheme for Chinese citizen and health insurance for non-Chinese employees)

b. Successful applicants are engaged under contract, 6 months probation applies.

c. Working load: 40 weeks (10 months) per year; 30-40 hours per week.

7. Audition:

a. Audition procedure and content:

I. Candidates in China: first and second round are conducted as interview. After successful online application, candidates will be notified.

II. Candidates outside of China:

● First Round: Upload of unedited video of musical presentation (after online application and upload audition according to your major’s requirements)

● Second Round: Personal Interview. Time and Place of interview to be announced.


b. Audition’s specific content:

I. Preliminary round

● Free choice of two concertos, one from Classic and one from Romantic era

● For violin: choice of Mozart concerto No. 3, 4 or 5 obligatory (including cadenza)

● For violoncello: choice of Haydn concerto in C-major, or D-major obligatory (including cadenza)

● Percussion: choice of one timpani solo work and one keyboard percussion instrument solo work obligatory

● Two orchestral excerpts (choose two different ones in style)

● Total duration of audition video material: no longer than 30 minutes.


II. Second round

● Free choice of one piece (different from preliminary round) that reflects the best technical and artistic skill of the applicant. Partial of the piece will be asked to play in the audition by the jurors (no longer than 15 minutes)

● Piece from the list selected by jurors on-site

● Sight-reading (sheet music provided on-site)
